More and more Irish people have been accessing pornographic websites since the age of austerity kicked in.

And the emergence of smartphones and other mobile devices, which means porn can be accessed almost anywhere, has also contributed to the porn phenomenon here.

One of the world's biggest pornographic video-sharing websites claims Ireland's porn habit has increased by 77pc since 2010, with 6.72 million visits every month.

The site, pornhub.com, collected data from Irish users over the last four years and says that people here spend an average of 9 minutes and 12 seconds per viewing session looking at pornographic content and click on 8.49 pages.

South Dublin, Fingal, Kildare, Limerick and Galway city also show a slightly greater demand for porn, while Naas, Swords and Letterkenny are among the top 10 areas for traffic to the site.

Generally, though, all the main urban areas have broadly similar patterns of usage. There is no Irish "capital" of porn.

We watch more porn in the cold depths of January but demand drops in September.

Vice-president at the site Corey Price claims January demand is simply down to dark days, cold weather and people missing their favourite porn outlets after returning from holidaying with their families.

The top-10 search terms have also revealed what gets us hot under the collar. Lesbian and teacher porn are favourites.

While most porn is accessed in the late evening and early morning up to 1am, there is a spike in the afternoon, between 2pm and 3pm.

Data also revealed how porn users here prefer Irish pornography.

Meanwhile, the porn star tickling everyone's fancy is known as US-born Lisa Ann, 42 -- star of the political parody porn flick Who's Nailin' Palin?

The Sarah Palin look-a-like porn star has a section of the internet almost exclusively dedicated to her and over half a million followers on Twitter.

Kim Kardashian, massage and yoga porn also featured strongly.

But Ireland does not spend as much time viewing saucy material as America, whose users spend 11 minutes on the Pornhub site per viewing session, and the UK, where users spend an average of 9.42 minutes. The Canada-based website has offices and servers across the US and in London.

The debate over the dangers posed by easy access to porn continues.

Some studies suggest that as many as 70 per cent of men and 30 per cent of women watch pornography.

Worryingly, there is now evidence that porn sites are where many young people go to find out about sex.

New data released this month found 70 per cent of men and almost half of women reported circumstances -- whether alone or with their partners -- where pornography use was acceptable in a relationship.

Many women indicated they would become less accepting of pornography use if it became habitual and developed into an addiction.
