TD Jerry Buttimer has spoken about coming out to Enda Kenny – and revealed the Taoiseach’s supportive response.
The Cork TD was speaking to Matt Cooper on the Last Word on TodayFM earler this evening.
He explained that he decided to reveal his sexuality to the Taoiseach as he wanted to start an LGBT group within Fine Gael.
“He looked at me and he gave me a dig into the chest and he says 'you're still the same guy, I'm still mad about you, let's go do this'.
"He's a man in his mid 60s from the west of Ireland who may be uncomfortable and who may have gone on a big journey himself, and he has, he showed me great empathy and support and affirmation."
Kenny has stated that he fully supports marriage equality and will actively campaign for a ‘yes’ vote in next year’s referendum.
He has been criticised in recent days for his decision to attend the New York St Patrick's day parade - which bans gay participants.
Social Protection Minister announced earlier this week that she would not attend the event in support of LGBT people.
