Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald met European counterparts to discuss what more could be done to combat the ongoing threat of organised crime across Europe.

"Gangs who are inflicting murder and mayhem in parts of Ireland are operating from other countries," she said.

"While appreciative of the co-operation we have with authorities and governments in those countries, I am very keen to discuss what more we can do together to face down these murderous thugs." The Justice and Home Affairs Council in Luxembourg is focused on justice issues, including cybercrime, the migration crisis, internal security and the fight against terrorism.

Speaking at the Council, she said: "I will discuss with my ministerial colleagues recent organised crime developments in Ireland and, importantly, how we can co-operate to tackle the serious threat posed by criminal gangs in our countries and across Europe."
