The head of the Marriage Equality campaign has backed the campaign of Averil Power to get re-elected to the Seanad.
Gráinne Healy, who chaired the successful Marriage Equality Campaign in the May 2015 same-sex marriage vote, urged Trinity College Dublin graduates to back the outgoing Independent Senator’s campaign.
Ms Power was originally a Fianna Fáil Senator who quit the party because she felt they were not serious about the marriage referendum campaign.
She recently stood as an independent Dáil candidate in Dublin Bay North polling almost 5,000 first preference votes and remaining in the hunt for a seat until the 12th count.
Commenting on Ms Power’s candidature for the Seanad, Ms Healy said she wholeheartedly urged all eligible voters to vote her back to Leinster House.
“I saw how Averil was able to work with people across all parties and no party. We need people like her back in the Seanad,” she said in a special support video.
Three of the 60 Seanad seats are currently reserved for Trinity College Dublin and the postal vote process will be completed late next month.
