Varadkar hints at desire for environment or economic portfolio in reshuffle
Leo Varadkar has dropped hints he would be interested in becoming Environment Minister in the Cabinet reshuffle – or taking up an economic portfolio.
Environment Minister Phil Hogan is tipped to become Ireland’s new European Commissioner, possibly getting the Agriculture portfolio in Brussels.
The Transport Minister has sought to play down suggestions he would be interested in becoming Health Minister.
Mr Varadkar says he has respect for Dr James Reilly so doesn’t want to be dragged in to speculation about becoming his replacement.
However, he also pointed out he has an interest in other areas.
“I’ve a background in health. I’ve a background in local government. I’ve a big interest in other policy areas, such as economic and finance policies,” he said.
“I’ll serve in any position I’m asked to serve in,” he added.
