Kerry TD Arthur Spring has confirmed that he will not be contesting the Labour leadership.

The party backbencher today pledged his support for Social Protection Minister Joan Burton, who is the clear favourite to succeed Eamon Gilmore.

Mr Spring’s decision not to contest the leadership means there will be a two horse race between Ms Burton and junior Health Minister Alex White.

Mr Spring, who is the nephew of former Tanaiste Dick Spring, said he discussed with Ms Burton her plans for the leadership.
