The pair were selected at the party’s selection convention in Palmerstown in West Dublin on Thursday night.

Speaking after the event, Deputy Robert Dowds said: "I'm very honoured to have been selected by the Labour members to contest the next General Election."

Ms Tuffy said she would prioritise more investment in public services if re-elected.

“In particular, I think the next government should prioritise further investment in our health service, including more public health nurses and community care,” she said.

Labour will be under pressure to hold onto its two seats in the constituency with opinion polls suggesting the party’s vote will be down significantly on its record 2011 performance when Labour won 37 seats.
