SINN Féin has been left red-faced after the party covered up an IRA message in a picture seeking to promote Gerry Adams’s role in fighting for a United Ireland.

The party released a black and white image of Mr Adams this week alongside the slogan “I was calling for a United Ireland before it was cool”.

However, it emerged the wording of the slogan covered a piece of piece of graffiti behind Mr Adams which read: “The IRA will never be beaten”.

The embarassment for the party was exposed by Fine Gael TD for Dublin North West Noel Rock.

Mr Rock said:

“Sinn Fein busting out the memes. But the second line appears to be blocking something. What could it be?”

In response, a Sinn Fein spokesman said:

"Catch yourself on. It was a humorous meme."

Mr Adams has consistently denied ever being a member of the IRA.
