Nicky McFadden's sad death causes a second by-election this week.
The Longford-Westmeath TD died on the day former Labour Party TD Patrick Nulty's resignation was officially accepted.
Mr Nulty's announcement of his resignation had already created a by-election in Dublin West.
Ms McFadden's passing will mean a second by-election in her constituency of Longford-Westmeath.
The late TD's sister, Gabrielle McFadden, the current Mayor of Athlone, is expected to be the Fine Gael candidate in the by-election.
In recent months, Cllr McFadden carried out official functions when Ms McFadden's condition deteriorated.
Fellow Fine Gael party members and elected representatives in Athlone also helped to support her during this time.
Longford-Westmeath is a four-seat constituency. In the 2011 General Election, Fine Gael won two seats, the Labour Party one and Fianna Fail one.
The by-election is expected to be held in the autumn, but the day of local and European elections, May 23, is also a possibility.
Before the year is out, there is expected to be a number of other by-elections, on foot of TDs being elected to the European Parliament and the appointment of the country's European Commissioner.
