People "want to pay for water", former environment minister Alan Kelly has said.

The Labour Party TD believes Fianna Fáil has entered "the race to the bottom" of politics.

He told Independent.ie's 'Floating Voter' podcast that even Fianna Fáil supporters don't back Barry Cowen's stance on water charges.

He suggested Mr Cowen is a "lone ranger".

Responding to an attack in which the Fianna Fáil TD accused him of always being angry, Mr Kelly said: "I don't mind being angry because this situation is wrong, illegal and immoral. It's a complete and utter farce."
