Finance Minister Michael Noonan has played down the controversy over Irish Water as the “cause du jour”.
Mr Noonan said €490m is being given to Irish Water from funding for local government, which comes from property tax receipts.
The failure of the Government to oversee spending by Irish Water was criticised by People Before Profit Alliance TD Richard Boyd-Barrett.
The Finance Minister said he wasn’t going to have a debate on Irish Water.
“It’s the kind of cause du jour at the moment,” he said.
Mr Noonan said it was appropriate to give the funding to Irish Water as it was now carrying out the functions of the councils.
“It’s doing what the local authorities are doing now, except it’s an overall authority,” he said.
