TAOISEACH Leo Varadkar was "thrilled" by his first visit to 10 Downing Street earlier this week, and the country's new leader appeared to be equally enthused by a private meeting with Angela Merkel earlier today.

Mr Varadkar tweeted pictures of the meeting with the German Chancellor on the second day of his first EU leaders’ summit in Brussels.

His newly-appointed Minister for European Affairs, Helen McEntee, was also in attendance.

"Formal meeting with Angela Merkel and @HMcEntee this morning," he wrote "Good discussion ahead on Brexit and today's #EUCO agenda".

A beaming Mr Varadkar's reference to scenes from the hit film 'Love Actually' while in Downing Street brought a mixed reaction earlier this week - but although he is smiling in the tweeted pictures, there is no mention of favoured German films... so far.

The two days of talks in Brussels have offered Mr Varadkar an opportunity to change the agenda away from the damaging controversy about the appointment of the former Attorney General to be a judge at the Court of Appeal.

Yesterday, he met with the President of the EU Council, Donald Tusk, and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
