A NEW panel of lawyers is being set up to examine allegations of Garda wrongdoing made to TDs over recent months.
Attorney General Maire Whelan will choose a group of legal counsel to be part of an independent mechanism to assess the allegations of malpractice made by whistleblowers.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald has received agreement from the Cabinet on a range of reforms of the gardai.
The Heads of Bill to reform the Garda Siochana have been agreed, including the inclusion of the Garda Commissioner under its remit.
The length of time allowed for making a complaint about gardai will also be extended to 12 months.
The new bill will extend the investigative powers of the Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission and address the recommendations of the Cooke Report.
