"I had an illness over the Christmas. I had a chest infection which some may have been aware of when I saw you last on Baggot Street launching something," he told reporters today.

"The infection didn't respond to antibiotics which developed into pneumonia but I'm back on the road again now," he said.

The 72-year-old arrived at the Department of Finance at 12.10pm to prepare for a news conference that he hosted this afternoon.

He underwent a number of procedures during the holidays and spent Christmas Day recovering in hospitals.

He spent several days in hospital but committed to attending this afternoon’s Cabinet meeting which will discuss the Government’s response to the floods.

The Limerick TD has also reiterated his determination to run in the upcoming General Election.
