A row has erupted over the position of the Dáil's Leas Ceann Comhairle.
Independent TD Mattie McGrath is understood to have contacted Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin and requested his party's support for the position.
But after the nomination process closed on Friday, it emerged Fianna Fáil's Pat 'The Cope' Gallagher had thrown his hat into the ring.
The Donegal TD, who is a native Irish speaker, is seen as favourite for the post, the contest for which will take place on Thursday.
Sinn Féin has put forward Dublin South West TD Seán Crowe.
Surprisingly, Fine Gael put forward no candidate. As the deadline has passed, the party may request permission to submit a late entry.
But it is understood Mr McGrath reacted angrily to the news that Fianna Fáil put forward its own candidate, instead of weighing in behind his nomination. The Tipperary deputy was a strong supporter of Mr Martin's bid to become Taoiseach. A Fianna Fáil source said there had been no deal agreed with Mr McGrath.
