DUBLIN councillor Mary Fitzpatrick will today announce her intention to seek Fianna Fail's nomination to contest the European election in the city next May.
Ms Fitzpatrick, who is understood to have the backing of the party leadership, is seen as favourite to take the Fianna Fail nomination
Fianna Fáil activists believe Ms Fitzpatrick’s public clash with then taoiseach Bertie Ahern and his supporters in the 2007 general election will be to her advantage in the election.
Earlier this week Ms Fitzpatrick confirmed she was “considering” seeking the nomination. However, sources close to the councillor have told independent.ie she is to announce her intention later today.
Fianna Fáil has no TDs in Dublin and no MEP, so the May election will be crucial to the efforts of leader Mícheál Martin to rebuild the party in the city.
No big-name candidate with a national profile has emerged. Former newscaster Anne Doyle is known to have turned an approach.
