JOE Higgins has been selected to replace Independent TD Stephen Donnelly on the bank inquiry.
The Socialist politician was formally ratified at a meeting of the Dail’s technical group this afternoon.
The decision to replace Mr Donnelly will quell the controversy surrounding the government’s handling of the affair.
Taoiseach Enda Kenny in particular came under strong criticism after two government senators were added to the inquiry committee, increasing it in seize from nine to 11.
Mr Kenny indicated last week that the government was determined to have a majority on the committee so that it could decide the terms of reference.
The revelation prompted a decision by Mr Donnelly, a Wicklow TD, to withdraw from the committee.
