Politics took a back seat for Minister John Halligan as he took time out to wed his long-term partner Elaine Powell.

A close group of family and friends saw the happy couple, who have been together for 20 years, married at a humanist wedding in Cork city yesterday.

Their ceremony included a mixing of the sands from Elaine's native Isle of Sheppey in England, and from Saleens beach in Waterford, where the Independent Alliance TD loves to swim. After the wedding the pair travelled to Kinsale, a spot Mr Halligan said "has a close connection to both of our hearts".

The work of government doesn't stop however, and the minister of state for training, skills and innovation is set to be back at his desk on Monday. The newlyweds hope to enjoy a holiday later in the year.

Fellow Independent Alliance minister Finian McGrath said: "I'm absolutely delighted for John and Elaine and wish them the best in forging a happy alliance in the years ahead."
