Independent Averil to run for next Dail

Former Fianna Fail Senator Averil Power is today declaring her intention to stand for the next general election as an Independent candidate.
The high-profile Dubliner, who stunned her party back in May by resigning, has said she intends to run to "make an impact in the Dail" on behalf of the constituents of Dublin Bay North.
Writing in today's Sunday Independent, Ms Power said the success of her adoption bill had convinced her that individual members of the Dail and Seanad could help deliver real change. She said the easier thing for her to do would be to leave politics, but she "cares too much to walk away".
"I believe the only way to make the Dail more independent of the Cabinet, and thereby secure better government, is to elect more independents. That is why I have decided to contest the next general election," she said.
"Dublin Bay North is probably the most competitive constituency in the country so I know it won't be easy. However, I care too much to walk away."
