Former Fianna Fail TD and member of the party’s ‘old guard’, John Curran, has been selected as a General Election candidate in Dublin Mid West.
Mr Curran, who previously served as Fianna Fail Chief Whip, finished first at tonight’s selection convention.
He secured 29 votes, defeating sitting councillor Trevor Gilligan (17 votes) and failed local election candidate Catriona McClean (9 votes).
Party sources say Ms McClean may well be added to the ticket by the party’s selection committee in order to met the challenge of gender quotas.
Curran, whose political base in mainly at the Clondalkin end of the constituency, lost his seat in the 2011 general election polling just over 5,000 first preferences on what was a disastrous day for the outgoing Fianna Fail /Green party coalition.
