A former Fine Gael TD says Health Minister James Reilly's days as health minster are "numbered".
Denis Naughten, who is now a Reform Alliance TD, says Mr Reilly's days are "limited at the moment".
Speaking to Morning Ireland earlier today, the Roscommon/South Leitrim deputy claimed Reilly does not enjoy support from his Cabinet colleagues or from his own political party.
"Well it’s clear now his cabinet colleagues are spinning behind the scenes to undermine the minister.
"We’ve had ministers talking out of both sides of their mouth," he told broadcaster Claire Byrne.
"No minister has come out publicly to support James Reilly.
"The Minister for Finance in the Dail yesterday failed to give an endorsement of the role of the minister for health.
"The minister’s days are limited at the moment," he said.
"Rumours have been in circulation around the minister for the last few weeks as to whether he intends to resign or be pushed.
"But it’s clear he hasn’t the confidence of his cabinet colleagues, he hasn’t the confidence of his own party backbenchers at this stage, and he doesn’t have a clear understanding of the issues."
Furthermore, the Health Minister “hasn’t a clear understanding of the issue of the medical cards”, Mr Naughten added.
"There’s also a fundamental problem where people legitimately entitled to medical cards having them temporarily withdrawn to save money."
