Explaining why she is backing Leo Varadkar, the Senator says she believes he 'thinks outside the box' and brings a 'fresh' perspective moving forwards.

Mulherin met both Coveney and Varadkar in their Dail offices to discuss their vision and policies for Ireland and despite Varadkar's urban, Dublin base, she says Varadkar has the ability to unite both rural and urban Ireland.

'Leo is not burdened by tradition,' says Mulherin.

Crucially, she says, he will help Fine Gael win more seats in the next general election, including her own, which she lost in 2016.

'The test for me is somebody who can think outside the box - he’s a breath of fresh air.  We also want to win seats back.  I want to win my seat back.'

Defending Varadkar's pledge to represent people who 'get up early in the morning' which Simon Coveney has attacked as the kind of talk that has divided society over the past decade, Mulherin agreed with such comments.

'It’s not very PC to say but there is a cohort of people who aren’t seeking work and there’s social problems there.  You have to call a spade a spade.  You don’t assist them by not telling them the truth.'

Each week on the Floating Voter, INM's political team discuss the main issues affecting Irish politics, bursting the bubble around Leinster House.  New episodes on iTunes and SoundCloud every week.
