FINE Gael’s Galway West TD Brian Walsh has resigned from the Dáil.
Mr Walsh’s retirement from public life was announced in the Dáil by Ceann Comhairle Sean Barrett this afternoon.
Before Christmas, the well-liked deputy announced he would not contest the forthcoming general election due to health reasons.
Mr Walsh lost the Fine Gael party whip when he voted against the contentious Protection to Life During Pregnancy Bill but returned to the party after a brief stint in the Opposition benches.
In November, he released a statement announcing his intention to step aside due to health reasons.
“I have done everything possible to resist making this decision and had hoped to overcome my condition in order to be able to continue,” he said.
“But in recent days, it has become clear that I have no choice but to accede to medical advice and withdraw my candidacy in the forthcoming general election,” he added.
