Fine Gael selects sitting TDs to contest election
Fine Gael has selected its two sitting TDs in Longford-Westmeath as the party's candidates in the constituency for the next general election.
TDs James Bannon and Gabrielle McFadden were chosen by delegates at a selection convention yesterday evening.
Westmeath TD McFadden had been hotly tipped to take the nomination after winning last year's by-election following the death of her sister Nicky.
Fianna Fáil has already indicated it will be running just one candidate in each county.
A source said last night that there were "fireworks" at the event.
They said there have been calls for the party to run a third candidate in the area.
In Offaly, the party chose sitting TD Marcella Corcoran Kennedy to stand for it in the next general election.
Ms Corcoran Kennedy was selected during a convention in Tullamore last night.
She was first elected to the Dáil in 2011 and before that served for 10 years as a member of Offaly County Council.
