Final hours in reign of leader

Sunday, 6:50pm: Clare TD Michael McNamara calls for Eamon Gilmore and Labour frontbench to step aside.

Sunday, 7:45pm: Labour's European candidate in Dublin, Emer Costello, (right) admits her chances of retaining her seat are slim

Midnight: Labour's electoral woes are compounded following the elimination of Costello at the third count

Yesterday, 10:30am: Gilmore meets Labour general secretary Ita McAuliffe and informs her of his decision to resign. He meets his immediate staff in Iveagh House

11am: Party headquarters receive notice of a motion of no confidence submitted by a member of the influential Central Council, Mick Sweeney

1:30pm: News breaks that eight members of the parliamentary party have lodged a vote of no confidence in Gilmore

3pm: Party sources confirm that Gilmore's resignation will take place in around an hour's time

4.10pm: Gilmore steps down as Labour leader, prompting an internal election for his successor
