On the ninth count, Mr Aylward was declared the constituency’s newest TD and was hoisted above the shoulders of his party members in celebration.

In his victory speech, Mr Aylward thanked his party for the support they have given him throughout the campaign and pledged to start working for the people who elected him tomorrow morning.

He also thanked Fine Gael candidate David Fitzgerald who trailed him by 5,000 votes.

Mr Fitzgerald thanked his rival and those who supported him throughout the campaign.

The final vote had Mr Aylward with 26,529 votes and Mr Fitzgerald with 21,652 votes.

The final count was the distribution of more than 16,000 votes of Sinn Fein candidate Kathleen Funchion.

However, almost 10,000 were non-transferable and did not influence the final vote.

Earlier this evening, party leader Micheal Martin travelled to the count centre for the result. He had been in Dublin previously for the result of the same sex marriage referendum.

Surrounded by party members, Mr Martin praised Mr Aylward and thanked councillors and activists who worked on the campaign in both Carlow and Kilkenny.

He dismissed suggestions that his leadership was in question during the campaign and insisted it was not an issue raised by voters.

“On the doorstep the reaction was very positive and no one on the doorstep questioned leadership or anything like that,” he said.

Early tallies showed Fianna Fail’s vote at 28pc in the constituency, which is the same result it polled in the 2011 General Election, but Mr Martin said this did not meaning the party’s support is stagnate.

“It is a completely different battlefield. You fight the battle you are in. You win the battle you are in, if you can. In this particular battle, we are ahead now and it looks like we are in a very good position to win this seat,” he said.

The seat was previously held by Fine Gael's Phil Hogan who is now a European Commissioner.
