It was far from an amicable split but despite Renua candidate Patrick McKee’s shock exit from Fianna Fail the party is still using his image on campaign literature for the Carlow Kilkenny by-election.

Mr McKee sensationally left Micheal Martin’s party to run against Fianna Fail candidate Bobby Alyward for Lucinda Creighton’s new political party two weeks ago.

However, an election leaflet for Mr Alyward still features Mr McKee as one of the party’s local councillors.

The leaflets were delivered to homes around the constituency in recent days.

The literature also features Mr Martin and Carlow Kilkenny TD John McGuinness posing beside Mr Alyward.

Mr McKee is listed alongside Fianna Fail councillors Joe Malone and Matt Doran, who represent the party in Kilkenny West.

A Fianna Fail spokesman said the party organised a leaflet drop with An Post before Mr McKee left the party and these were delivered to voters.

He said updated material will be produced for the rest of the campaign.

Mr McKee joined Ms Creighton’s party amid accusation he also tried to join Sinn Fein, which he has denied.

The 26-year-old will be running against Fine Gael councillor David Fitzgerald and Sinn Fein candidate Kathleen Funchion.
