Fianna Fail's Lorraine Clifford, who is running in Dublin's Pembroke-South Dock constituency, took to Twitter last week to tell of how she received an abusive email in relation to her pregnancy.

"I got some vile abuse via email this evening in relation to my pregnancy and they wonder why women are reluctant to enter politics," she wrote.

In an interview with a Sunday newspaper, Ms Clifford told of how a man contacted her via email, referring to her as "dirty scum who should be eradicated from society".

The man also wrote: "If you're trying to make a difference go to the gym and lose a few pounds, then do your roots as they are showing."

Ms Clifford replied to the man, stating she had no intention of going to the as she was five months pregnant.

The man replied that she was "devilishly smart" regarding the timing of her pregnancy.

He then wrote: "I hoped you told that to your constituents, that you will be going on extended maternity leave most probably when your baby is born and all of us poor suckers will be paying for it. You have it all planned so."

After sharing her experience on Twitter, Ms Clifford received messages of support from members of the public as well as candidates from other political parties.
