Eamon Gilmore resigns as Tanaiste

Eamon Gilmore has today resigned as Tanaiste, it has been confirmed.

Mr Gilmore said he resigned in writing in a letter to Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs said the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore, TD, has written to the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, TD, resigning the office of Tánaiste.

In his letter, Minister Gilmore said his resignation would enable the Taoiseach to nominate his successor at the earliest possible time.

Mr Gilmore also thanked the Taoiseach for his courtesy and co-operation, saying it had been a privilege and an honour to work with him in the leadership of Government during a very difficult time in the country’s history.
