MEP Luke Ming Flanagan has been labelled a “druggie” and a “gypsie” by a disgruntled voter.
Mr Flanagan received a hand-written “abusive” letter in the post, but appeared to take the criticism in good spirits, and he shared it online.
The letter writer said: “Well druggie Flanagan. You thought getting your photo with Communist Greek PM would make you a hero. Well take two more E tablets and relax.”
“Your hero has just talked to the Germans and he like yourself is an a**e hole. Germany rules the EEC and you and your anti austerity alliance are just a pack of gypsies,” the writer continued.
“Your family, I am told, are ashamed of you and from now on no one will want to talk to you if they have any cop on.”
Mr Flanagan tweeted a photo of the letter and dubbed it “snail mail bullying”.
“I blame the inventors of ink. It's sale should be strictly monitored. I'm so traumatised,” he tweeted.
