Delivery's all wrong, Eamon
WHY is Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore putting out press releases welcoming the fall in unemployment under the banner of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade?
The Punt was a little surprised to see such a release drop into the business email inbox this week. And if any reporters wanted further comment or information, they were invited to contact the press office of the Tanaiste's department.
What have the Live Register figures got to do with foreign policy or trade? The short answer is nothing, really. Yes, one assumes it's part of the wider economic recovery story being told by department officials overseas.
But it should really be the preserve of Jobs Minister Richard Bruton to send out departmental press releases welcoming the fall in the numbers signing on.
Of course, Mr Gilmore, as Tanaiste, has a right to trumpet the improving labour market, but we think using the resources of the Department of Foreign Affairs to do so isn't really the most appropriate thing to do.
