Agriculture Minister Michael Creed refuses to reveal whether he will back Leo Varadkar or Simon Coveney in the Fine Gael leadership contest.

"The last time I checked it was a secret ballot and I'm going to honour the secret ballot. They are two great colleagues," he told the Irish Independent.

He was speaking at the Teagasc/FBD Insurance Student of the Year Awards 2016 at the Merrion Hotel in Dublin yesterday. In his opening address, however, he did state his hopes of retaining the agriculture brief.

"I attended this event last year and I was only a week in the job and I do hope to be back next year," said Mr Creed to a round of applause from fellow agri-industry leaders and farmers.

Waterford farmer Shane Fitzgerald, a student of Kildalton Agricultural College, was named 2016 winner of the Teagasc/FBD Student of the Year award.

He thanked his family for their "never-ending support". The first runner-up award went to Gary Clarke, of Tuam, Co Galway, who studied at the Agricultural College in Mountbellew. The second runner-up award went to Shane Dolan, of Athlone, Co Westmeath, who attended Gurteen Agricultural College.
