Housing Minister Simon Coveney wants to see other local authorities raise local property taxes after Limerick voted to do so.
However, he stressed he would not "pressurise" councils into doing so.
Mr Coveney was speaking in Galway where the local authority is due to vote on the LPT on Monday.
He referenced the decision of Limerick council to increase the LPT, saying it was a precedent he would like to see followed in other parts of the country.
He said he was well aware of the budgetary pressures facing Galway County Council, adding: "The decision they have to make on Monday is a matter for them and I'm not going to pressurise them one way or another.
"Obviously, we've seen Limerick make a decision to increase property tax and they are going to get an extra €1.6m in terms of money that they can spend on local services because of that."
