There are concerns for the former Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland Martin McGuinness after it emerged that he has spent the last two weeks in hospital.

The Irish News is reporting that Mr McGuinness was brought to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry because of the severe side-effects of his ongoing treatment.

He stepped down from politics in January, sparking last week's election.

After conceding that he was suffering with medical problems Mr McGuinness decided not to run again and he played no part in the election.

Last week his son Fiachra tweeted: “@M_McGuinness_SF has just voted Sinn Fein 1 and 2.”

However, it is not known whether Mr McGuinness voted in person, by postal vote or by proxy. According to the Irish News his wife Bernie voted alone in Derry on Thursday.

A Sinn Féin spokesman told Independent.ie that Mr McGuinness’s health was a "private matter".
