Cannabis legalisation among petitions

Proposed legalisation on cannabis, suicide awareness and water meter boxes were among the diverse issues examined by the Oireachtas Committee with responsibility for public petitions.
The committee on public service oversight and petitions, chaired by Sinn Féin TD Pádraig MacLochlainn and first established in 2011, has delivered a report on its role. As well as the serious issues raised, it recently considered a call for UFC fighter Conor McGregor's face to be put on €1 coins.
Mr MacLochlainn said the committee's establishment was the first time the public had an opportunity to influence the parliamentary agenda in Ireland through a petitions system.
