THE Cabinet has approved a whopping €480m bailout for the health service.
The funding will be used to deal with a major spending overrun, as well as a ‘winter initiative’ aimed at reducing the pressures on emergency departments.
And the €12m previously diverted away from mental health services is being restored. The move was strongly argued for by Minister with responsibility for Mental Health Helen McEntee and her senior counterpart Simon Harris.
Meanwhile, government sources confirmed that an additional €40m will be given to the Department of Justice.
The additional funding is due to be ring-fenced for garda overtime.
Tánaiste and Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald and Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan have been under pressure to address the escalating gangland crisis.
