brought to politics by daughter

Aine Collins was motivated to run for the Dail to improve services for her young daughter who has cystic fibrosis.

The Cork North West TD has been a strong campaigner for an 11-bed isolation unit for adult CF patients and a new dedicated unit for children with CF in Cork University Hospital. It recently got the go-ahead.

And when she was elected to Dail, she became the first-ever female TD in the rural constituency.

Much was expected of her due to her business background. She is a certified accountant with 20 years' experience in business development and management consultancy.

Although she has not been one of the most frequent contributors in the Dail, she has worked effectively in the background on issues such as the credit crunch affecting small businesses.

Married with three children, she lives near Millstreet in Cork. Her personal hero is Michael Collins but she would have never thought she would be ambushed in the Dail by a TD called Tom Barry.

It is understood that she was embarrassed by the "horseplay incident" but she has maintained a dignified silence on it.
