NEWLY elected Fianna Fail TD Bobby Aylward has insisted Averil Power’s shock resignation is “not going to take from his day” as he returned to Leinster House after his by-election victory.

Mr Aylward, who is taking Ms Averil’s office after she was asked to leave, dismissed the controversy over her resignation as something that “happens in politics”.

To cheers from party members on the plinth of Leinster House, he said: “It’s not going to take from my day. My day is today and I intend to make the best of that.”

Mr Aylward returns to national politics after failing to be elected in the last general election.

He has served under Bertie Ahern and Brian Cowen led Fianna Fail government.

Under-fire Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin said he had nothing more to say about Ms Power’s decision to quit and her criticisms of his leadership

“Things happen, things move on. I have already articulated my views on that particular issue and I’ve no intention of adding any further on that. This is Bobby Aylward’s day. It’s a very happy day for bobby, his family and his supporters,” Mr Martin said.

He described Mr Aylward’s by-election win as “outstanding”.

“It is actually the first by-election win for the party in 19 years and it’s the first by-election in 45 years that we won from the Opposition,” he said.

“Hard work pays off, listening to people pays off and having candidate who are rooted in community and families who are rooted in community also pays off and that’s what happened in this by-election,” he added.
