A news conference held by the Alliance of Independents at Leinster House was cut short this morning as Oireachtas rules prevent non-members from speaking on the plinth.

The Alliance of Independents continued the news conference outside the gates and announced that seven candidates are due to run in the next general election.

They indicated they expect to run 20 candidates in total.

Senator Feargal Quinn said he is going to be the Parliamentary Chairman of the Alliance, but he will not run in the next Seanad election, RTE reports.

The Alliance also emphasised the fact that they are not a political party, rather an ‘alliance’, and said there would be no party whip except for when there is a confidence vote.

They said they will not have a binding manifesto.

They also said there has been no decision made on a name for the group or whether they would go into government.

The Alliance was formed in March following a meeting of TDs, Councillors and a Senator in Tullamore, Offaly.
