FORMER justice minister Alan Shatter's keenly anticipated announcement this afternoon on his severance package has resulted in speculation he will resign his seat.
The Fine Gael TD for Dublin South has faced calls from his former Government colleagues to confirm he won't be taking the €70,000 golden handshake he is entitled to.
Mr Shatter has waited until the eve of the local and European elections to state his intentions.
The former minister is due to make a formal announcement this afternoon.
The event on the plinth of Leinster House takes place after the moratorium on TV and radio stations from broadcasting stories about the elections.
But the delay has sparked speculation in political circles that the Fine Gael TD may even resign his Dail seat.
Ministers and Fine Gael figures are in the dark about Mr Shatter's plans this afternoon.
"Anything is possible," a senior party source said.
If Mr Shatter were to resign, a by-election would have to be held in Dublin South in the Autumn along with the filling of the vacancies arising from the European elections and the filling of the European Commissioner's post.
