Politicians are going global
A GROUP of politicians will build on an Irish tradition when they travel to Africa and Asia to serve as volunteers.
Fine Gael TD Lucinda Creighton is one of four Irish parliamentarians taking part in the VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas ) 'Politicians for Development' programme during the Dail and Seanad summer break. The Mayo native will fly to Uganda on Wednesday where she will work with an alliance of organisations for nine days.
"It's a bit daunting because I'm going on my own and I won't know anybody but it's a fantastic country and a great opportunity," she said last night.
Meanwhile, Labour Party senator Dominic Hannigan travelled to Kathmandu yesterday to work with the Blue Diamond Society, the only organisation in Nepal for sexual minorities.
Minister of State Dara Calleary will travel to Mozambique and meet people living with HIV and Aids and their carers, while Independent Senator Fiona O'Malley will travel to the Republic of Tajikistan.
