THE political watchdog has updated its guidelines to take on board new rules on funding for parties, including an effective ban on corporate donations.
The Standards in Public Office Commission (SIPO) has now revamped its rules to bring it up to date with legislation introduced by Environment Minister Phil Hogan last year.
The changes came into effect on January 1 and include reducing the maximum donation a candidate or public representative can receive from €2,539 to €1,000 and by a political party from €6,348 to €2,500.
Corporate donations over €200 are banned unless the company giving the money has registered with SIPO, and the donation has been approved by the members, shareholders or trustees of the company.
Anonymous donations have been cut from €126 to €100.
