Polish man stabbed

A POLISH man in his 20s is recovering in hospital after he was stabbed outside a house in front of his girlfriend and mother.

The victim was knifed by a man known to him in the driveway of the house in the Riverdale estate in Cahir, Co Tipperary, on Saturday night. He was taken to South Tipperary General Hospital and later transferred to Cork University Hospital where he was being treated last night.

New Mater A&E open

DUBLIN's Mater Hospital has closed its old A&E department and opened a new facility.

The overcrowded A&E had been the focus of protests and vigils for years. The new facility opened last night, while 436 car parking spaces in the basement were also opened to the public.

€300,000 challenge

TV star Kathryn Thomas has urged the public to help raise vital funds for the homeless – and get fit into the bargain. More than 600 people will climb the highest peak in each of the four provinces in a bid to raise more than €300,000 for Focus Ireland.

The 'Four Peaks Challenge', which Thomas is supporting, will take place from June 7 to 9. Climbers will take on Carrauntoohil in Kerry on June 7, followed by Mweelrea in Mayo, Slieve Donard in Down and Lugnaquilla in Wicklow.

Sutherland hits out

DELEGATING controversial political decisions to the courts that legislators would rather not address themselves was "quite wrong", former attorney general Peter Sutherland has warned.

Giving the second Brian Lenihan memorial address in TCD, the former EU Commissioner said we live in a time when the fundamental values of the dignity of man and the equality of man were defined in widely different ways and the courts should not be left alone to make these determinations.
