The PSNI Chief Superintendent Alan McCrum said of the incident: "It could have been catastrophic for Belfast and Northern Ireland."

A third man has been arrested by police investigating terrorist offences linked to an Easter commemoration in Londonderry.

A spokesman for the PSNI said the suspect had been taken to the serious crime suite in Antrim for questioning.

Several hundred people attended the event on April 9 last year during which a masked man read out a statement from the Real IRA threatening to attack police.

The PSNI said its investigations were continuing.
