Poachers using cover of lost man

Stephen Maguire

HEARTLESS poachers are using the disappearance of a young man as cover for their illegal operations along a stretch of river on the Tyrone/Donegal border.

Hundreds of people are involved in the search for Lifford man David Colhoun who went missing on May 22 last.

But fisheries officers have confirmed they have now seized record numbers of illegal nets. The poachers are setting the nets along the Rivers Mourne, Foyle and Finn while pretending they are searching for David. The Colhoun family say they are saddened by the development. David's dad Joe has searched the river night and day for the past 10 weeks.

"All I want is to have my son home and to be able to give him a proper burial," he said.

Top fisheries officer John McCartney warned: "If you are putting out a net on the river to search for a body, you put it out during daylight and with the assistance of ourselves or the search and rescue teams, not at 2am."
