Plan to remember war dead with cross
THE foundation stone for a monument to those who died during the two world wars has been laid at Glasnevin cemetery.
Heritage Minister Jimmy Deenihan was joined by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Theresa Villiers and the British Ambassador to Ireland Dominick Chillcot to lay the foundation for the Cross of Sacrifice.
The foundation stone was put in place by the delegation for the Cross, and will commemorate the 208 service men and women who died during both world wars and are buried at Glasnevin.
The event was marked by the attendance of a colour party from the Defence Forces.
"It is a great honour for me to attend this event and lay the foundation stone for this new Cross of Sacrifice," Ms Villiers said.
"I can think of no better setting for a memorial to remember the tens of thousands of Irishmen who made the ultimate sacrifice during the World Wars."
