Pioneering lung op patient dies

IRELAND'S first double lung-transplant patient has died, five years after the operation.

Jack Mullery, from Rosses Point, Co Sligo, who suffered from emphysema, underwent the five-hour transplant in the Mater Hospital, Dublin in 2006, when he was aged 58.

The father of five, who worked as a senior training officer with FAS, died peacefully at the same hospital this week.

Before the operation, he had required daily oxygen and been confined to a wheelchair.

The surgery was carried out by the head of the transplant unit, Freddie Wood, and physician Jim Egan.
