A 21-year-old man is continuing to fight for his life after a serious assault in Co Monaghan on Saturday morning.

TJ Duffy (21) from Ardee, Co Louth sustained serious head injuries when he was assaulted in Carrickmacross shortly before 4am.

According to the Sunday World, the prime suspect is in his 20s and was known to the victim.

The incident occurred outside Paddy Power's bookmakers, close to Fiddler's nightclub, where a number of people had been socialising at the time.

The unconscious man, who is in his early 20s, was found by a passer-by lying on the road and gardai were called.

The injured man received medical assistance at the scene before being taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

He has since been transferred to Beaumont Hospital where his condition is described as critical.

It's believed Mr Duffy has a clot in his brain.

The suspect is believed to have fled the scene on foot via an alleyway off Main Street.

The scene was preserved and technically examined.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information, particularly those who may have been in the vicinity of Main Street, Carrickmacross between 3.30am - 4.15am Saturday April 8 2017 and who may have a recording of the incident on their phone/dash cam, to contact them at Carrickmacross Garda Station on 042 9690190, the Garda Confidential Line, 1800 666111 or any Garda stations.
