The Irish Independent's Mark Condren -- recipient of the AIB Press Photographers Association of Ireland (PPAI) photojournalist of the year award two years running -- found out about his latest coup yesterday.

He snapped up second prize in the Europol 2011 Law Enforcement Photo Competition.

"I was delighted, I really was. It's a European award so it is all about the scale of it, it goes across the continent," said Mr Condren (32), from Castletownroche in Cork.

He took second place for his image of garda divers searching the River Liffey for evidence.

The picture is in contrast to another image for which he received a special commendation -- a shot of his father Larry and son Ben (5) walking hand in hand, in matching garda uniforms.

Both pictures can be found in his book, 'The Guards: Behind the Scenes with the Men and Women of An Garda Siochana' in aid of Temple St Children's Hospital.
