A young man who sustained a serious spinal injury while jumping into a pool has been placed in an induced coma.
Ryan Croker (25) from Moycullen, Co Galway, suffered serious neck and back injuries after jumping into a shallow pool at his rented home in Perth, Australia, on January 26.
His mother Kathleen and sister Grace flew out last week and are keeping a vigil by his bedside at the Royal Perth Hospital.
The young construction worker, who had been living in Australia for three years, underwent surgery yesterday to insert a tracheotomy tube to help him breathe.
Aunt Anne Kearns told how the family had been left shattered by the accident but are praying that Ryan will recover.
"He will need a CAT scan and MRI but that won't be for a week or so," she said.
Locals in Galway are now aiming to raise €200,000 to bring Ryan home.
Anybody wishing to donate can do so via the Ryan Croker Benefit Fund on Facebook.
